What the work involves

Day to day

Studying wildlife populations and habitats and working to protect them - field surveys, camera trapping, data analysis, human-wildlife conflict mitigation and advising on management and policy.

Who this suits

Fit

Scientifically rigorous people who genuinely want to live in the field. India's biodiversity and its conservation challenges are globally significant, and good field ecologists are few.

The honest reality

Read this one

Very few permanent posts exist and most work is grant-funded on short contracts with modest pay - people in this field commonly string together projects for a decade. A master's is the minimum and a doctorate is expected for research leadership. Fieldwork means extended isolation in remote areas with basic facilities and some physical risk. Conservation frequently collides with local livelihoods and political interests, and losing those arguments is a normal part of the job. It attracts far more applicants than it can employ, and the romance of it does not survive the first field season.

The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1
2 years

Class 12 with Biology Required

The science base.

2
3-4 years

B.Sc in Zoology, Forestry, Environmental Science or Life Sciences Required

Three or four years. Field experience during the degree matters more here than marks - volunteer on surveys and camps.

3
2 years

M.Sc in Wildlife Science or Ecology Required

Two years. The Wildlife Institute of India programme is the recognised one and is highly competitive. Other universities run good ecology and conservation master's programmes.

4
1-2 years

Build field and analytical skills Required

Survey methods, camera trapping, transects, species identification, GIS and statistics in R. Being genuinely comfortable in difficult field conditions is a requirement, not a bonus.

5
2-4 years

Work on projects Required

Conservation NGOs, research institutes, forest department projects or funded studies. Be clear-eyed: early positions are usually short-term, project-funded and poorly paid, and that persists for some years.

6
3-5 years

Ph.D., or the forest service Optional

A doctorate towards research and permanent scientist posts, or the Indian Forest Service - which offers the authority and security that project-funded conservation work does not.
