Medicine and Dentistry

The medical and dental degrees themselves - MBBS, BDS and the postgraduate ladder of MD, MS and MDS. Long training, two bottlenecks rather than one, and a dentistry market that needs discussing honestly.

Overview

About Medicine and Dentistry

This is the degree ladder rather than the field. MBBS runs five and a half years including a compulsory rotating internship; BDS five years including internship. Above them sit MD and MS for medicine and MDS for dentistry, each three years, and above those the super-specialisations. For what a Biology background opens up more broadly, including the routes that do not need a medical seat, see Medical and Healthcare.

How you get in. NEET UG for MBBS and BDS, with admission through central and state counselling. NEET PG for MD, MS and MDS after internship. Government seats cost a fraction of private ones and are allocated strictly by rank, so the same degree can differ in cost by an order of magnitude depending on where the rank lands.

The second bottleneck. Most students plan for NEET UG and discover NEET PG afterwards. It is the harder gate: every MBBS graduate wants a postgraduate seat, because in practice an MBBS alone increasingly means general practice or a junior hospital role while specialisation is where the career opens. Many graduates take more than one attempt, working as junior residents in between. Plan the whole ladder at the start, not at the end of the internship.

The honest part, and it is about dentistry. India produces far more BDS graduates each year than the market absorbs, and a substantial number end up in poorly paid associate positions, in MDS to differentiate themselves, or out of clinical practice altogether. Private BDS fees are high and the return on them is genuinely uncertain. This is well known inside the profession and rarely said to a student choosing between a private BDS seat and another route. Talk to practising dentists in your city before committing the money.
