The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1
2 years

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required

Biology is compulsory. You must also be 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

2
1-2 attempts

Clear NEET UG Required

The single entrance for every MBBS seat in India, government and private, including the deemed universities. There is no other route in. Many candidates take a second attempt, and that is common enough not to be a mark against you.

3
4.5 years

MBBS Required

Four and a half years of academic study across pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical phases, in a college recognised by the National Medical Commission. Check recognition before you accept a seat, particularly at a new private college.

4
1 year

Compulsory rotating internship Required

One year, paid a stipend, rotating through the major departments. You cannot be registered without completing it.

5

Permanent registration with a State Medical Council Required

Provisional registration covers you during internship; permanent registration comes after. This is what makes you legally a doctor, and it is renewable - keep it current.

6

Practise, then decide about postgraduation Required

You can work as a medical officer immediately. Most doctors sit NEET PG within a few years, because in India the speciality, not the MBBS, is what determines the rest of the career.
