Overview

About Defence & Police

This covers the Army, Navy and Air Force, the central armed police forces such as CRPF, BSF, CISF and ITBP, and state police from constable to officer rank. It is one of the few fields where selection is almost entirely by examination and physical standard rather than by which college you could afford, which makes it genuinely open to students from any background.

How you get in. After Class 12, through NDA for the officer route into the three services, and through the Agniveer intake and state police constable recruitment for the ranks. After graduation, through CDS, AFCAT, the UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant examination, and state sub-inspector recruitment. Each has its own written stage, followed by physical efficiency tests, medical examination, and for officer entries the five-day Services Selection Board.

The thing that decides it, and it is not the written paper. Physical and medical standards eliminate more candidates than the exam does. Height, weight, chest expansion, vision, colour perception, flat feet, knock knees, dental condition, old fractures, tattoos in certain positions — all of these are grounds for rejection at the medical stage, and each service and force publishes its own list. Check the current standards for the specific entry you are aiming at before you begin preparing, not two years in. A correctable issue found early is often correctable; found at the medical board it is a lost attempt.

The honest part. Competition is severe — lakhs of applicants against a few thousand posts is normal, and most serious aspirants need more than one attempt. Age limits mean the window is finite, so run a degree or another qualification alongside preparation rather than after it, and decide in advance how many attempts you will give it. Separately, the terms of short-tenure enlistment schemes have been revised before and may be revised again; confirm the current tenure, retention percentage and post-service benefits from the official notification for the year you are applying in.

Defence & Police After 10th: Overview

Defence and police services include officer, technical, operational, administrative and support roles across different organisations. Entry requirements vary by recruitment, education level, age, physical standards, medical fitness and nationality rules. WhoShouldChoose

Who Should Choose This Path?

Interest in the uniform alone is not enough; students should understand the daily duties and lifestyle of the specific service and role.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I join defence or police after Class 10?

Some notification-specific entries may accept Class 10, while many require Class 12, diploma or graduation. Only the current official notification is authoritative.

Are physical standards the same for every service?

No. Height, measurement, endurance and medical rules vary by organisation, post, category and notification.

Can coaching guarantee selection?

No. Selection depends on official eligibility and performance in the prescribed stages. Anyone guaranteeing recruitment is misleading you.

How should students prepare physically?

Use gradual, age-appropriate training, balanced nutrition and adequate recovery. Seek qualified guidance and avoid unsafe supplements or extreme routines.

Where should I check vacancies?

Use only the relevant government department or recruiting organisation’s official website and published notification.

Should I keep a backup career plan?

Yes. Recruitment is competitive and medical or physical outcomes can change plans, so continue education and maintain civilian alternatives.
