Overview

About Design and Fashion

This is design applied to what people wear and the materials it is made from: garment and apparel design, textile and surface design, accessory, footwear and jewellery design, fashion styling and communication, and the merchandising and production side that gets a garment from a sketch to a shelf. Interface and graphic design are covered separately under UI and UX design and design and creative.

How you get in. A four-year B.Des or B.F.Tech through the NIFT entrance, NID DAT, or UCEED for the IITs, after Class 12 in any stream. Private design universities run their own tests. Diplomas and certificate courses in tailoring, pattern making, garment construction and styling are shorter, far cheaper, and lead into real production and boutique work — a route that suits someone who wants to earn sooner and is rarely presented alongside the degree.

Where the work is. Apparel export houses and manufacturers, which are the largest employers by a distance and cluster around Tiruppur, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Mumbai; retail and e-commerce fashion brands; textile mills and home furnishing; costume design for film and television; visual merchandising; buying and sourcing offices; and independent practice — a label, a boutique, bespoke tailoring or freelance styling.

The honest part. The industry is larger and less glamorous than its image. Most jobs are in production, merchandising, quality and sourcing rather than in designing collections, and those jobs are the ones that pay steadily and teach you the trade. Entry salaries are modest and the first years are long. Two things decide outcomes here: a portfolio that shows construction and problem-solving rather than illustration alone, and understanding the commercial side — costing, fabric, fit, deadlines. Designers who can also cost a garment get promoted. Those who only sketch usually do not.
