Overview
Electrical trades cover wiring and installation in homes and buildings, industrial electrical maintenance, motor and pump repair, panel work, transmission and distribution line work, and increasingly solar installation and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. It is one of the most consistently demanded skills in the country, because everything electrical eventually needs someone.
How you get in. An ITI certificate in Electrician or Wireman is the standard route, typically two years after Class 10, followed by an apprenticeship. A polytechnic diploma in electrical engineering leads to supervisory and junior engineer posts. Solar installation and EV charging have their own short certifications, and both are worth adding — they are growing faster than the traditional work.
The licence, which is the part people skip. Most states require an electrical licence — wireman, supervisor or contractor grade — issued by the state electrical licensing board, to carry out and certify electrical work legally. It is what allows you to take contracts rather than only wages, to sign off installations, and to work for builders and institutions that will not employ unlicensed people. Getting it is a defined process with an examination behind it, and it separates a tradesperson with a career from one taking whatever comes.
Where the work is. Building and infrastructure contractors, factory and plant maintenance, state electricity boards and distribution companies, the railways, solar installers, facility management companies, and independent local work — house wiring, repairs, appliance and motor servicing. This trade suits independent work particularly well: the tools are affordable, customers come from the neighbourhood, and demand repeats.
The honest part. This work can kill you, and shortcuts are what do it. Test before touching, isolate properly, and refuse jobs where the customer wants it done cheaply in a way you know is unsafe — the liability lands on you. Beyond safety: unlicensed work caps what you can earn and shuts you out of the contracts worth having, so treat the licence as part of the qualification rather than as paperwork for later.

Common questions
Electrical trades install, test, maintain and repair wiring, equipment, controls and power systems under safety rules.
Routes include recognised ITI electrical trades, apprenticeships, vocational programs and polytechnic diplomas, each with different work scope.
Electrical theory, measurement, wiring, diagrams, tools, testing, fault finding, protective equipment, codes, documentation and safety.
Electrician, maintenance technician, panel or controls technician, facilities, utilities, construction, renewables and contracting after experience.
Electricity can cause fatal injury. Training must be supervised and recognised; licences or competency requirements vary, and unsafe shortcuts are unacceptable.
