Overview

About Journalism and Writing

Journalism and writing covers reporting, editing, broadcast and video, photojournalism, digital publishing, and the wider professional writing market — content, copy, technical documentation and communications. It is a field the internet has reshaped more thoroughly than almost any other here.

How you get in. A three-year BA in journalism or mass communication, or any degree followed by a postgraduate diploma — the postgraduate route from a strong institution is often the more respected one. But this is a portfolio field: published work, a blog with a real readership, a YouTube channel about something specific, or a student publication counts for as much as the qualification, and sometimes more.

Where the work has moved. Traditional print has contracted while digital has grown, and much of the hiring is now in digital newsrooms, video, podcasting, brand and corporate communications, and the content teams inside companies. Regional-language digital media is expanding faster than English and is far less crowded — a reporter or creator working in Marathi, Bhojpuri, Tamil or Bengali faces a fraction of the competition.

The honest part. Entry pay in journalism is low, hours are unsocial, and the early years are demanding for reasons that are not about talent. Separately, the low end of content writing — generic articles, product descriptions, SEO filler — has been compressed hard by automation, and building a career on that kind of work is no longer viable. What holds value is what a machine cannot do: reporting that requires being somewhere, sources who trust you, subject expertise, and a voice. Aim at those from the beginning.
