Overview
Mass communication is the wider media and communication industry: advertising and brand communication, public relations, corporate communications, media production for television, film and digital, radio and podcasting, social and digital media, and media research. Reporting and editorial work is a related but distinct field, covered under journalism and writing.
How you get in. A BA or B.Sc in mass communication or a BJMC after Class 12, or any degree followed by a postgraduate diploma or MA — the postgraduate route from a well-regarded institute carries real weight here. Specialised programmes exist in advertising, public relations, film and television production and animation. As in most creative industries, a body of work matters: campaigns you helped run, videos you made, a channel you built, accounts you managed.
Where the work is. Advertising agencies in creative, servicing, strategy and media planning; public relations consultancies; the corporate communications teams inside companies; production houses and broadcasters; digital and social media agencies; content and creator platforms; and the marketing communication functions of practically every organisation of size.
The honest part, and it is a mismatch between what students apply for and where the jobs are. Most entrants want the visible creative work — on-air, on-screen, campaign creative — and those roles are few and heavily contested. The steady, better-paid and faster-growing work is in public relations, corporate communications, brand and content strategy, and media planning: less glamorous, in far greater demand, and offering more secure progression. Someone who enters through PR or corporate communications and is good at it tends to be earning well and managing people while the more visible route is still fighting for a break. Second, agency work at the entry level is long-houred and modestly paid, and the industry runs on client deadlines rather than yours. Both things are survivable if you chose them deliberately.
