Overview

About Nursing

Nursing is direct clinical care — assessment, medication, procedures, monitoring and the day-to-day management of patients. It is among the most reliably employable qualifications in the country, and one of very few that opens well-paid work abroad without a postgraduate degree.

The courses. ANM is around two years and leads to community and primary health work. GNM is around three years and is a long-established hospital route. B.Sc Nursing is four years and is the degree route, with a post-basic B.Sc available to GNM holders and M.Sc above it for specialisation, teaching and nurse practitioner roles. Admission is through state counselling or an institutional entrance depending on the state and college.

Check recognition before you pay a rupee. The qualification only works if the college is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and the state nursing council, because registration is what allows you to practise. Unrecognised and provisionally approved colleges do enrol students, and their graduates find out at registration — after three or four years and full fees — that the certificate cannot be used. Verify the college on the council's published list yourself; do not accept the college's own word for it.

The honest part. Entry pay in Indian private hospitals is low relative to the responsibility and the training, shifts are rotational and physically hard, and the emotional load is real. Government hospital posts pay considerably better and are correspondingly competitive. The overseas route — the Gulf, UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia — is genuine and transforms the economics, but it requires registration in that country, an English or German language qualification, and usually two years of clinical experience first. Plan for that from the first year rather than deciding in the final one.
