B.Sc Computer Science

Undergraduate 3–4 years UG-015

Three-year science degree (four-year Honours under NEP) covering programming, data structures and computing fundamentals. Outcomes improve markedly with self-driven project work or a follow-on MCA.

Start from Class 12
1 entrance exam 2 careers reached

B.Sc Microbiology

Undergraduate 3–4 years UG-022

Bacteriology, virology, immunology and industrial microbiology. Reliable QC and testing employment across pharma, food and water sectors, with postgraduate study needed for research and senior roles.

Start from Class 12
1 entrance exam 1 career reached

B.Sc Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics

Undergraduate 3–4 years UG-027

Foundational science degrees where postgraduate study substantially determines career outcomes. Strong base for research careers, teaching, competitive exams and analytics roles.

Start from Class 12
1 entrance exam 2 careers reached

B.Sc Statistics

Undergraduate 3–4 years UG-030

One of the most quantitatively transferable science degrees, feeding directly into analytics, actuarial and data science careers. ISI Kolkata's B.Stat programme is the most competitive entry point in this field.

Start from Class 12
1 entrance exam 1 career reached

Integrated B.S.-M.S / B.Sc-M.Sc (IISER / NISER)

Undergraduate 5 years UG-075

Five-year integrated research-focused science degree designed as a direct pathway into doctoral research. Students typically receive INSPIRE or institute scholarships, and the programme is aimed at research careers rather than immediate employment.

Start from Class 12
3 entrance exams 3 careers reached

M.Sc (Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics)

Postgraduate 2 years PG-012

The standard route into research and higher education in core sciences. IIT JAM opens M.Sc places at IITs and IISc, and CSIR NET-JRF provides fellowship funding for doctoral study - both are the pivotal qualifying exams in this pathway.

Start from Graduation
2 entrance exams 1 career reached

MA (Master of Arts)

Postgraduate 2 years PG-024

Offered across English, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Psychology and other disciplines. A strong foundation for civil services preparation and academic careers; UGC NET is essential for teaching posts.

Start from Graduation
1 entrance exam 9 careers reached

Ph.D (Humanities and Social Sciences)

Doctorate 3–6 years DOC-006

Doctoral research across literature, history, sociology, political science, economics, psychology and allied fields. UGC NET-JRF provides fellowship funding and is effectively mandatory for academic careers.

Start from Postgraduation
1 entrance exam 2 careers reached

Ph.D (Sciences)

Doctorate 3–6 years DOC-010

Doctoral research across physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and interdisciplinary sciences. CSIR NET-JRF provides a substantial fellowship and is the standard funding route.

Overview

About Sciences and Research

This covers the pure sciences — physics, chemistry, the biological sciences, mathematics and statistics — and the research careers built on them. It runs from laboratory and field science to academia, and into the national research establishments that employ scientists directly.

How you get in. A three or four-year B.Sc after Class 12 with science, through CUET or a university entrance, or an integrated five-year M.Sc at an IISER, NISER or a central university. Research proper begins at master's level and is entered through CSIR-NET, GATE or an institutional entrance, with a PhD following. The Junior Research Fellowship attached to NET is what makes a research degree financially possible for most people.

Where the work is. University and college teaching, which requires NET or SET and increasingly a PhD; the national laboratories and research organisations — ISRO, DRDO, BARC, CSIR institutes, ICMR — recruited through their own examinations; industrial research and development in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, materials and energy; analytical and testing laboratories; scientific data and computational roles; and science writing, publishing and outreach.

The honest part. A research career is long and financially thin for years. A PhD takes four to six years on a fellowship stipend, postdoctoral positions are temporary, and a permanent research or faculty post typically arrives in your thirties if it arrives. The people who thrive are the ones who wanted the work itself, not the title. Everyone else should know that a B.Sc alone leads to a narrow set of options, and that the graduates who do best either continue to a master's and beyond, or pivot deliberately — into data and analytics, into industry quality and regulatory roles, into teaching, or into the many government examinations that any graduate can sit. Decide which of those you are doing by the second year of the degree rather than in the final semester.
