Overview

About Travel and Tourism

Travel and tourism is the business of moving people and organising what they do when they arrive: travel agencies and ticketing, inbound and outbound tour operations, destination management, tour guiding and interpretation, corporate travel desks, online travel platforms, and the tourism departments that promote a state or region.

How you get in. A BA or B.Sc in travel and tourism management, a diploma or certificate course, or IATA and airline ticketing certifications for the agency side. Government-approved tour guide training and licensing runs through the tourism ministry and state departments and is a formal qualification in its own right. Many people also enter with no tourism qualification at all, on the strength of languages, area knowledge or hospitality experience.

What actually gets you hired, and it is not the certificate. Languages, above everything. A guide or tour manager who speaks French, German, Japanese, Spanish or Mandarin is worth several who do not, and foreign-language ability is the single highest-return skill in this field. After that: genuine knowledge of a region, comfort handling people when plans fail, and for the agency side, speed and accuracy with bookings and fares.

Where the work is. Travel agencies and tour operators, online travel companies, hotel and resort travel desks, corporate travel management, cruise and rail tourism, state tourism corporations, adventure and eco-tourism operators, and independent work — guiding, planning bespoke trips, or running a local operation, which is common in this field and needs little capital.

The honest part. Income is seasonal and the sector is fragile: it swings with holidays and weather, and it stops entirely during a crisis, as the pandemic showed. Entry pay is low and agency work involves long hours during peak periods. Build for that shape rather than against it — save through the season, hold a skill that transfers to hospitality or events in the off months, and if you are going independent, get one language to a working standard before anything else.
