What this is
Understand the role
Operating the technology behind heart diagnosis and treatment — ECG, echocardiography, treadmill and Holter testing, and assisting during angiography, angioplasty and cardiac surgery in the catheterisation lab.
What the work is
Day to day
Performing and recording diagnostic tests, preparing patients, running and monitoring equipment during interventions, and maintaining the machines. In the cath lab you are part of a small team working on someone whose heart is the problem, which is exacting and often urgent.
What you need
Capability
A B.Sc in Cardiac Care Technology or Cardiovascular Technology after Class 12 with science, with an M.Sc available for senior and teaching roles. Recognition of the programme matters, as with all allied health courses — verify it before enrolling.
What people get wrong
Read this one
Not realising how much the specialisation is worth. Cardiac technologists are in demand because heart disease is common and cath labs cannot run without them, and the skills transfer readily to jobs abroad. The trade-off is on-call pressure and working with critically ill patients, which is not for everyone.
The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required
The standard entry for allied health degrees.
B.Sc in Cardiac Care or Cardiovascular Technology Required
Three years plus a one-year internship, most of it inside a working cath lab. A two-year diploma exists and gets you in faster, but caps how far you go.
Register with your state allied health council Required
The Allied and Healthcare Professions Act 2021 is bringing these professions onto statutory registers, and states are constituting councils at different speeds. Check whether yours has one yet, and register as soon as it does.
Work in a cath lab or cardiac ICU Required
You run ECG and echo, assist during angiography and angioplasty, and handle the haemodynamic monitoring. It is a high-pressure environment where the cardiologist depends on your setup being right first time.
Add electrophysiology or perfusion Optional
EP studies and device implantation, or a move into cardiac perfusion, which needs its own training and pays accordingly.
Senior technologist or lab in-charge Optional
Running the lab, rostering, inventory of expensive consumables and training juniors. An M.Sc helps for teaching posts.

Common questions
The ones people actually ask about this work.
What is the qualification for cardiac care technology?

A B.Sc in Cardiac Care Technology or Cardiovascular Technology after Class 12 with science, with an M.Sc available afterwards for senior and teaching roles. As with all allied health programmes, verify the institution's recognition before enrolling.

What does the job involve?

Performing and recording ECG, echocardiography, treadmill and Holter tests, preparing patients, and running and monitoring equipment during angiography, angioplasty and cardiac surgery. In the catheterisation lab you are part of a small team working on someone whose heart is the immediate problem.

Is there demand for cardiac technologists?

Yes. Heart disease is common in India, cardiac units and catheterisation labs cannot operate without technologists, and the skills are recognised internationally, which makes overseas work a realistic option with experience.

What is difficult about the work?

On-call pressure, and working regularly with critically ill patients. Cardiac emergencies do not wait, and procedures can go wrong quickly. It suits people who stay composed under time pressure.
