What this is

Understand the role

The business behind sport: running leagues, franchises, academies and stadiums; sponsorship and commercial partnerships; athlete representation; event operations; marketing, ticketing and fan engagement; and broadcast and digital rights. India's league economy has made this a genuine industry rather than a handful of jobs.

What the work is

Day to day

Depends entirely on the seat. Commercial roles sell and service sponsorships. Operations roles deliver matches and events, which is logistics under a fixed deadline. Marketing and content roles build audience. Agency roles manage athletes' contracts, endorsements and schedules. Common to all of them: seasons, deadlines that do not move, and long hours around events.

What you need

Capability

A degree in sports management, or any degree plus an MBA or a postgraduate sports management programme — the specialised ones are useful mainly for the industry contacts and internships they carry. What actually gets people in is having worked on events: volunteering at tournaments, interning with a league, club or agency, or running college sports. This industry hires people it has seen deliver.

What people get wrong

Read this one

Entering because they love watching sport. The work is business work that happens to be about sport, and the people who thrive are good at commerce, operations or marketing first. Being a fan is not a qualification and, in athlete-facing roles, is a liability.

Also worth knowing: entry pay is modest relative to general management for the same qualification, and a lot of early work is contract-based around specific seasons and events.

Common questions

The ones people actually ask about this work.

What does sports management actually involve?

The business behind sport — running leagues, franchises, academies and venues; sponsorship and commercial partnerships; athlete representation; event operations; marketing, ticketing and fan engagement; and broadcast and digital rights. What qualification do I need?

A degree in sports management, or any degree plus an MBA or postgraduate sports management programme. The specialised programmes are useful mainly for the industry contacts and internships they carry. What actually gets people hired is having worked on events — this industry hires people it has seen deliver.

Is being a sports fan a qualification?

No, and in athlete-facing roles it is a liability. The work is business work that happens to be about sport, and the people who thrive are good at commerce, operations or marketing first. Enthusiasm gets you interested; it does not get you hired or promoted.

What should I know about pay and stability?

Entry pay is modest relative to general management for the same qualification, and a good deal of early work is contract-based around specific seasons and events. Progression is fast for people who deliver, because the industry is small and reputation travels quickly. Build a specific competence — sponsorship sales, event operations, athlete management — rather than a general interest in sport.
