What this is
Understand the role
Planning what athletes eat and drink so that training produces adaptation rather than breakdown: fuelling around sessions, body composition targets in weight-category and aesthetic sports, hydration, recovery, and evidence-based guidance on supplements.
What the work is
Day to day
Assessing athletes, building individual plans, working with coaches and physiotherapists, adjusting through the season, and educating athletes who are receiving contradictory advice from everyone around them. Supplement guidance carries a serious responsibility, because contaminated products cause failed doping tests.
What you need
Capability
A B.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics or Food Science and Nutrition, then a postgraduate qualification, with a sports nutrition specialisation or certification on top. Registration as a dietitian strengthens clinical credibility considerably. Practical exposure with a team or academy matters as much as the qualification.
What people get wrong
Read this one
Expecting full-time team positions. In India these are few and concentrated in professional franchises and national camps. Most practitioners build a mixed practice — private clients, gym and academy tie-ups, online consulting, and general clinical dietetics alongside the sports work — and treat sport as a specialisation rather than the whole income.
The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 12 with Biology Required
Biology and chemistry are the base for a nutrition degree.
B.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics Required
Three years covering biochemistry, human nutrition and dietetics.
M.Sc, and a dietetic internship Required
Two years plus internship. Registered Dietitian status through the Indian Dietetic Association is what distinguishes a qualified professional from the very large number of unqualified people giving diet advice in this space.
Add sports nutrition specialisation Required
A recognised sports nutrition certification. Energy systems, hydration, periodised nutrition, recovery and the anti-doping implications of supplements - the last of which can end an athlete's career if you get it wrong.
Work with athletes Required
Academies, SAI centres, teams, or private clients. Practical constraints - travel, hostel food, family diets - decide more than theory does.
Team nutritionist, or independent practice Optional
Working with professional teams or federations, or private practice with athletes and serious amateurs.

What it pays
Indicative bands.
| Stage | Pay band | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Any experience | ₹18,000 – ₹35,000 / monthly | Varies by employer |
These are ranges, not offers. Pay varies by city, employer size, sector and your own skill more than by job title. Treat the band as the shape of the market, not as a number you can hold anyone to.
