09 · Earnings

What it pays, and what changes it

In India, B.Tech Automobile Engineering graduates usually start at ₹22,000 to ₹45,000 a month. EV, battery systems, power electronics and automotive software roles can improve your prospects as you gain relevant skills.

India

Pay differs by employer, city, role and specialisation.

StageMonthlyWhat it depends on
Entry level ₹22,000 - ₹45,000 Graduate trainee or junior role after B.Tech, often in manufacturing, service, testing, components or EV firms.
Early career ₹30,000 - ₹55,000 After gaining experience in a vehicle, component, testing or service role.
Experienced specialist ₹45,000 - ₹80,000 Experience in areas such as battery systems, power electronics, vehicle testing or automotive software.

Indicative bands for 2026, not measured salary data. What people actually earn varies by employer, state and sector.

10 · The honest part

The honest part

A four-year B.Tech is a serious cost, especially at private colleges where total fees may reach ₹25 lakh. Entry-level pay is often ₹22,000 to ₹45,000 a month, so compare fees with likely early earnings. The work is not only about designing cars. Many early roles involve service support, testing, production or supplier-side work. You also need to keep learning as EV systems change.

The course still gives you a useful base in powertrains, chassis, vehicle dynamics and automotive electronics. Demand is shifting towards battery systems, power electronics and software, so students who build those skills have more relevant options. You can also move later into an M.Tech, an EV or battery specialisation, an MS abroad or an MBA.

Students who do well usually treat the degree as more than classroom study. They use labs properly, learn diagnostic and testing work, and build projects around batteries, motors, vehicle electronics or data. They also look for internships and apprenticeship-style shop-floor exposure, rather than waiting until final year for placement.
