Overview
Corporate and commercial law is the law of business rather than the law of the courtroom. It covers company law and governance, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, competition, taxation, data protection and intellectual property. The work is drafting, negotiating, structuring and advising, and it happens in an office rather than before a judge.
How you get in. Either a five-year integrated BA LLB or BBA LLB straight after Class 12, through CLAT, AILET or a university entrance, or a three-year LLB after any bachelor degree. Enrolment with a state Bar Council follows. Company Secretary is a separate qualification that overlaps heavily with this work and is a genuine alternative route into corporate compliance.
Where the work is. Law firms, the in-house legal teams of companies, banks and financial institutions, compliance and company secretarial functions, consulting firms, and legal process and contract management operations. Specialisations in data protection, competition and intellectual property are growing faster than the general corporate practice around them.
The honest part. Which law school you attend matters more in corporate law than almost anywhere else in Indian professional life. Top firm recruitment concentrates heavily on the national law universities and a small number of other institutions, and a graduate from outside that set generally enters through smaller firms, in-house roles or a specialisation built deliberately over several years. That route works, but it is slower, and it helps to know that at the start. Second, the hours in corporate practice are long in a way the salary figures do not convey — closings run overnight and weekends are not reliably yours. Choose it knowing both.
