Overview

About Finance and Investment

This covers investment banking, equity research, asset and wealth management, mutual fund distribution and advisory, treasury, risk, private equity and the fintech businesses now built around all of them. It is the commercial end of finance, distinct from the accounting and audit side.

Two routes, and the second one is rarely mentioned. The competitive route is B.Com, BBA or engineering, then an MBA in finance, CFA or CA, aiming at banks, funds and research desks. The accessible route is the NISM certifications — inexpensive, examinable in weeks, and the legal prerequisite for working in mutual fund distribution, as a research analyst, or as an investment adviser. They open real, licensed, client-facing work without a premium degree, and for someone building an advisory practice in a smaller city they matter far more than an MBA does.

Where the work is. Banks and non-banking financial companies, asset management companies, broking and research firms, wealth and family office advisory, insurance, fintech and payments, and independent financial advisory. Registration as a SEBI investment adviser is what allows you to charge for advice.

The honest part, in two pieces. First, the roles that give this field its reputation — investment banking, private equity, top-tier research — are few in number and concentrated in Mumbai and a handful of firms, recruited largely from a short list of business schools. Most finance careers are not those, and are still good careers. Second, and more urgently: the paid trading course and signal-selling industry targets exactly the people who read pages like this one. Guaranteed returns are not a thing that exists, an advertised profit screenshot proves nothing, and anyone genuinely earning consistently from the market has no reason to sell you a course about it. Learn from the NISM syllabus, which costs almost nothing and is the actual professional standard.
