Overview
Insurance covers life, health, motor, property and commercial risk, and the work behind it: underwriting and pricing risk, assessing and settling claims, advising customers, surveying losses, and the actuarial science that decides what a policy should cost. Penetration in India remains low by international standards, which is the reason the sector keeps expanding.
The most accessible route in finance, and one of the least discussed. Becoming a licensed insurance advisor requires Class 10 or 12 depending on the category, a short training course and an IRDAI examination. It costs very little, takes weeks rather than years, and can be done alongside other work or study. For someone in a small town with a local network, it is a genuine independent earning route rather than a token one.
The professional routes. Underwriting, claims, operations and risk roles through a commerce, science or management degree, often with an Insurance Institute of India qualification alongside. Public sector recruitment through LIC AAO and the general insurance companies' examinations, which are stable, well-paid and competitive. Surveying and loss assessment as a licensed specialisation. And actuarial science, through the Institute of Actuaries of India examinations.
The honest part, in two directions. Advisor work is commission-based, which means no salary and no floor — income depends entirely on policies sold, most of the people who start drop out, and the ones who last build it slowly on trust within a community. Treat it as building a practice, not as taking a job. At the other end, actuarial science is exceptionally rewarding and exceptionally hard: a series of examinations that typically takes the better part of a decade alongside full-time work, with low pass rates per sitting and a significant dropout rate. Both ends of this sector are real careers. Neither is the quick one it is sometimes presented as.
