Overview

About Psychology and Counselling Careers

Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour, and the applied professions built on it: clinical psychology, counselling and psychotherapy, child and educational psychology, organisational and industrial psychology, sports psychology, neuropsychology, and forensic and criminal psychology. Demand has risen sharply as mental health has become something Indian families are willing to talk about and pay for.

The single most important thing to understand before enrolling. A bachelor degree in psychology does not qualify you to counsel anyone, to call yourself a psychologist, or to practise. It is a foundation degree. Practice requires a master's, and clinical practice requires supervised clinical training and registration beyond that — the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology or its current equivalent, through an institution recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Those places are few and admission to them is very competitive. Students routinely begin a three-year BA expecting to be therapists at the end of it and discover in the final year that they are at the beginning of a seven-year path.

The routes. BA or B.Sc in Psychology after Class 12 in any stream, then an MA or M.Sc with a specialisation. For clinical work, the M.Phil route and RCI registration. For counselling, a master's plus a recognised counselling qualification and supervised hours. For organisational psychology, a master's or an MBA in human resources. For school and educational psychology, a master's with a child and educational focus. Research and teaching run through NET, SET and a PhD.

Where the work is. Hospitals and psychiatric facilities, private clinics and independent practice, schools and colleges as counsellors, corporate human resources and organisational development, rehabilitation centres and de-addiction facilities, NGOs and community mental health programmes, mental health technology platforms, forensic and correctional settings, and research and academia.

The honest part. This is a long, expensive, credential-heavy path to independent practice, and the years between the degree and a sustainable income are real. It is also genuine, needed work with growing demand and a good income once established, particularly in private practice in cities. Two practical things: verify that any programme you enrol in is recognised by the body that governs the practice you intend to enter, because unrecognised qualifications cannot be registered; and get into supervised practical exposure early, since this is a field where hours with actual clients, not marks, decide competence.
