What the work involves
Day to day
Running a dairy business - managing cattle, feed and milk yield, chilling and transport, and selling either to a processor or directly to consumers as milk and value-added products.
Who this suits
Fit
People with land and appetite for a daily operating business. Demand for milk is constant and non-seasonal, direct-to-consumer and value-added products earn far better than bulk supply, and institutional credit and subsidy support for dairy is among the more accessible available.
The honest reality
Read this one
Capital requirements are heavy - cattle, shed, chilling and transport - and most of it is borrowed before any income arrives. Animals need attention twice a day every day of the year, which makes leaving the farm genuinely difficult. Disease can wipe out returns quickly. Bulk procurement prices are set by processors and leave little negotiating room, so the profitable route is value addition and direct sale, which is a marketing business rather than a farming one. Skilled labour for cattle handling is increasingly hard to find.
The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
A dairy or food technology background, or farming experience Required
B.Tech Dairy Technology gives you the processing knowledge. Many successful dairy entrepreneurs instead come from farming and buy in the technical skill.
Work in the industry first Required
Two or three years in a plant, a cooperative or a dairy business. You need to know procurement economics and what spoilage really costs.
Decide the model Required
Fresh milk distribution, value-added products such as paneer, curd and ghee, or a farm-to-consumer brand. Value addition is where the margin is; fresh milk is where the volume and the risk are.
Set up with the right licences Required
FSSAI registration or licence depending on turnover, GST, pollution control consent for a processing unit, and legal metrology approval for packaged weights. Plan this before the equipment arrives.
Secure supply and cold chain Required
Reliable milk procurement and unbroken chilling. NABARD and state dairy schemes support equipment finance and the project report is what decides whether you get it.
Grow the brand or the volume Optional
Retail distribution, institutional supply, or a direct-to-consumer subscription model. Dairy rewards consistency far more than novelty.

What it pays

These are ranges, not offers. Pay varies by city, employer size, sector and your own skill more than by job title. Treat the band as the shape of the market, not as a number you can hold anyone to.
