Who it suits

B.Tech Information Technology suits you if you want a four-year, full-time engineering degree focused on software, networks and enterprise systems.

  • You have passed Class 12 with Physics, Maths, and Chemistry or Computer Science.
  • You are ready to prepare for JEE Main, a State CET, BITSAT or a university entrance test.
  • You want work linked to software development, databases, cloud systems or business analysis.
  • You prefer studying information systems, networking and enterprise applications alongside core computing.

07 · Cost

What it will actually cost you

For the full four-year B.Tech IT course, fees usually range from Rs 1,00,000 - 25,00,000 total, mainly depending on the type of institution.

Line itemTypicalWorth knowing
Government or state institution fee Rs 1,00,000 - 6,00,000 total This usually covers the four-year course fee at government or state institutions.
IIT or NIT fee Rs 6,00,000 - 10,00,000 total This is the typical four-year fee band for IITs and NITs.
Private institution fee Rs 4,00,000 - 25,00,000 total Private university fees vary widely, so check the full four-year amount before accepting a seat.

Government seats often have lower fees than private seats. Check the college prospectus and counselling rules for reserved-category concessions, scholarships, any stipend support, and fee-refund conditions before you pay the admission amount.

09 · Earnings

What it pays, and what changes it

In India, B.Tech Information Technology graduates commonly start at ₹28,000 to ₹80,000 a month. Your pay depends heavily on the role, employer and location.

Entry level ₹28,000 - ₹80,000 First role after B.Tech IT, such as software developer, business analyst, database administrator or cloud support engineer.
Early career ₹28,000 - ₹80,000 After building experience in a software, cloud, database or enterprise IT role.
Experienced ₹28,000 - ₹80,000 Several years of relevant work in a specialist or higher-responsibility IT role.

Indicative bands for 2026, not measured salary data. What people actually earn varies by employer, state and sector.

10 · The honest part

The honest part

A B.Tech in IT takes four full-time years. You cannot take it as a distance or online degree. Fees range widely, from about ₹1 lakh to ₹6 lakh in government or state colleges, ₹6 lakh to ₹10 lakh at IITs or NITs, and roughly ₹4 lakh to ₹25 lakh at private colleges. The IT degree also overlaps heavily with CSE, so the degree title alone may not set you apart when you apply for similar roles.

There is a fair case for choosing it if you want computing work but are especially interested in information systems, networking and enterprise applications. It can lead towards software development, databases, cloud work or business analysis. Starting pay varies a lot, with the recorded range at about ₹28,000 to ₹80,000 a month. Do not treat the upper end as a promise from the course or college.

Students who do well usually take the overlap with CSE seriously. They learn the core computing work, then build depth in one area such as databases, cloud, networking or enterprise systems. They use labs and projects to show what they can do, instead of relying only on marks. They also choose internships and later study, such as M.Tech, MCA or MBA, to match the work they want.
