IT covers software development, data engineering and analysis, cloud and systems administration, testing, cybersecurity and technical support. It is entered through a three-year BCA or B.Sc Computer Science, a postgraduate MCA, or a four-year B.Tech in Computer Science — and, more than any other professional field in India, through demonstrable skill regardless of which of those you hold.

How you get in. BCA and B.Sc Computer Science take Class 12 with Maths in most states, often without a competitive entrance. MCA follows a degree, with NIMCET for the NITs. B.Tech CSE runs through JEE and state tests and is the most competitive route by admission, though not always by outcome.

What decides the outcome. What you can actually build. Hiring in this field runs on technical interviews and practical tests to a degree that is unusual in India, which means a BCA graduate with real projects and solid fundamentals competes directly with a B.Tech graduate who has neither. It is the most meritocratic entry on this site, and the most punishing of people who expect the degree to do the work.

The honest part. The entry-level market has tightened, hiring is more cautious than during the boom years, and the volume recruitment that once absorbed large graduating batches has slowed. Skill still finds work; a degree alone finds much less than it did five years ago. Be especially careful of institutes selling "job guarantee" or "placement assured" programmes, often with a loan attached — the guarantee is usually qualified into meaninglessness in the contract, and the loan is not.

Choosing between the routes here. Software development and web and mobile development are the two that hire at entry level in real numbers, and either is a sensible first job. Data work is best entered through analyst roles rather than aiming at data scientist. Cybersecurity and cloud are different — both are largely SECOND jobs, because you cannot secure or operate systems you have never built or run. Enter through development, support or infrastructure, get two or three years of genuine technical grounding, then move across. A fresher holding cloud or security certificates and no operational experience will find far fewer doors open than the course marketing implies.
