Overview

About Aviation and Maritime Careers

Aviation covers flying, aircraft maintenance engineering, air traffic control, cabin crew and airport ground operations. Maritime covers the merchant navy — deck and engine officers, and ratings. Both are well paid at senior level, both are internationally mobile, and both ask for money or years up front in a way most fields do not.

How you get in. For a pilot, a Commercial Pilot Licence through a DGCA-approved flying school, with Class 12 PCM and a Class 1 medical. For maintenance, an aircraft maintenance engineering programme at a DGCA-approved institute. For merchant navy officers, IMU CET into a Diploma in Nautical Science or a marine engineering degree; for ratings, a GP Rating course after Class 10 or 12, which is the low-cost entry into the sector. Air traffic control is recruited separately by the Airports Authority.

Verify the approval before you pay anything. Training here is only worth what the regulator recognises. A flying school must be DGCA-approved; a maritime institute must be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and appear on its published list. Unapproved institutes exist, advertise heavily, and leave graduates with a certificate no employer can accept. Check the regulator's own website for the institute name. This single step prevents the most common and most expensive mistake in this field.

The honest part. A CPL with type rating runs into tens of lakhs and comes with no job attached — hiring moves in cycles with the airlines, and newly licensed pilots have waited years for a first seat during downturns. Many families fund it on a loan against property. If you take this route, take it with clear sight of that risk and a plan for what happens if the first two years bring nothing. Merchant navy pays well and taxes differently, but the cost is months at sea away from everyone you know, and the sea time requirement is not negotiable.
