Overview

About Performing and Fine Arts

This covers performance and studio practice: Indian classical and contemporary music, dance in its classical and popular forms, theatre, acting for film and screen, and the fine arts — painting, sculpture, printmaking and applied art. It also covers the professions built around them, which is where most of the sustainable work sits.

How you get in. Through a BFA or BPA at a university or a specialist institution, through the National School of Drama for theatre, the FTII and SRFTI for film and television, and through the long-established route that predates all of them — sustained training under a teacher, which in Indian classical music and dance remains the qualification that other practitioners actually recognise. Formal degrees matter for teaching posts and government roles; training and reputation matter for performance.

Where the income comes from, and this is the practical heart of it. Very few artists live on performance or sales alone. A working life in this field is usually assembled from several sources: teaching, privately or in a school or university; performance and commissions; work in the production industries — film, television, streaming, advertising, gaming and animation, which employ far more artists than the gallery and concert circuit does; arts administration and curation; and government cultural bodies, which offer scholarships, fellowships and posts.

The honest part. Income is irregular and rarely tracks talent, particularly early on. The artists who sustain a career are usually the ones who built a teaching base or a production-industry skill alongside the practice, rather than treating those as failure. Do that deliberately and early. Also worth knowing: government scholarships and fellowships for young artists genuinely exist and are under-applied for, because the people eligible for them rarely hear they are there.
